slingpageIf you haven’t heard, one of the newest Instant Social Bookmarking applications is Slingpage. Still in it’s infancy, but gaining ground, this application allows friends and or subscribers to instantly be alerted when someone sends, or ’slings’, a web page or video.

So why do I think this could get big? Well, personally I like the idea that I can be updated on the newest sites, news, or whatever online. It’s kind of like Twitter meets StumbleUpon. Also, I can see all the slings I’ve made or the slings that others have sent me. Slingpage stores my Favorite Slings or my Web Dev Tips Slings in a place where anyone can subscribe.

Two things I don’t like about this application:

1) The fact that only certain slingcasts, subscriptions to pages you may like, are shown from slingpage’s site.
2) I can only invite my friends from other applications like facebook instead of searching for them and adding them to slingpage.

I’m sure that as more people sign up this will change.

Well, I have got to go sling some more pages. If you make slingpage part of your social networking applications, be sure to add me as a friend and sling some good pages my way.

Today’s Internet is still roughly where the automobile was during the era of Henry Ford’s Model T,” wrote Microsoft Corporation Chairman Bill Gates in 2000. “We’ve seen a lot of amazing things so far, but there is much more to come. We are only at the dawn of the Internet Age.”

And much more has come, said Zach Katkin… click here to read the full article.

Answers the question: How do I add my logo to a browser’s address bar?

It’s been awhile since I first installed Mozilla Firefox. One of the things I noticed was a fancy logo next to the address bar in the browser. Then with tabbed browsing I saw a logo for each web site. Microsoft added this ability when it introduced Internet Explorer 5.5. Now with IE7 you can see the logos in tabbed browsing as well. Here’s how you can place your logo next to the address bar. It will also show up when someone bookmark’s your site or adds it as one of their favorites.

I should clear up that the logos are referred to as favicons and it’s full file name is normally favicon.ico. Click here for Troubleshooting tips for favicons

First create a favicon

Here are a few places to create favicons for free. You will need the image that you like to show up in the address bar. Make sure to name the file favicon.ico

After you have created the favicon, download it to your computer and follow the next steps.

Next upload the favicon

The best place upload the .ico file is in the root directory of your web site. In most cases this is the same place where your index file is.

Finally, link your favicon.ico file

Link this on every page of your website. If you have a header file (header.php or header.asp etc.) then this will just take a few seconds.

Copy and past this link between the head tags (<head></head>) on your pages.

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" />

This is a common way to link the icon using XHTML and the one that we use on our site.

Here is another way:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

And yet another way:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://yourdomain.com/favicon.ico" type="image/vnd.microsoft.icon">
<link rel="icon" href="http://yourdomain.com/favicon.ico" type="image/vnd.microsoft.icon">

Troubleshooting and Tips

What if the favicon you just added isn’t showing up? Here are some things that may help if you cannot see your favicon:

  • Make sure it is uploaded and the link is in the proper place
  • Try deleting your browser’s history and cached Internet files - How to delete usage history
  • Try restarting your browser, this should be done after you delete your browser’s history
  • Try adding a question mark after your favicon link:
    <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico?">
    This will force the server to look for a new favicon every time the page loads.

If you follow those steps you should see your new logo appear in the address bar of your favorite browser.

I received an e-mail this morning stating that BlueDot.us is now Faves.com. Personally I like the name change. Faves.com is much easier to remember.

What is Faves.com?

Simply put Faves.com is a social bookmarking site.

From their website:

“Faves is a site about websites that are rated and organized by real people into a wide variety of topics. Our community is finding new web sites every day.”

Learn more about Faves.com here.

Should I join Faves.com?

Joining Faves.com and adding your website to Faves.com may help increase traffic to your site, but here is a word of caution, this is a social community website that recently launched a new anti-social twist. It seems that your bookmarked sites, faves, need to be posted to the relevant topics and you must be a known as someone who continually bookmarks sites to relevant topics. All this plus, each bookmark can be voted on by others.

So, should you join? Probably.

How popular will your site be? Well, that depends on how much you are involved on faves.com.

Currently, the site receives about 1.1 million visits each month, so it may be worth the time.

So what do Google™ and gas stations have in common? Well, nothing really, unless you are a gas station attendant and you are asked for directions to here, there, and places you have never heard of before. This tedious task (unless you do not mind the human interaction) of giving directions may soon become a thing of the past, introducing Google™ at the gas pump!

Wow, that seems really interesting, buy why should I care?

If you own a business that has a physical address, you should. This just adds another reason why your business should be listed, and up-to-date, in Google™ Maps. Some others include Google™ 411 and Google™ Maps for your Phone. You can also add Google™ Maps for your Website.

In case you have never seen the mapping system, take a gander here:

Pretty cool huh? Add or edit your businesses information on Google™ Maps today, or contact us and we can help you out.

Ok, so you’ve heard us flash around this title “Client Representative” and you might have a few questions about this position.

Questions like:

  • Isn’t “Client Representative” just a fancy name for a Sales Rep?
  • What does a Client Representative really do?
  • What qualifications does a Client Representative need to have?
  • Can anyone be a Client Representative?
  • How did I end up with my current Client Representative?

Hopefully, after reading this post you will understand what your CR does and how you can utilize his/her services.

Isn’t “Client Representative” just a fancy name for a Sales Rep?

Well, I suppose it depends on what you define as a Sales Rep. If your definition is a person that handles a transaction for you one time or someone who comes back to you only when they want you to buy; then it most certainly is not. For the Client Representative (CR) selling is not the priority, no really it’s not. Instead your CR is your company’s personal web/marketing strategist. Which leads me to the next question…

What does a Client Representative really do?

As your personal web/marketing strategist, it is the CR’s responsibility to ensure that all of your goals for the Internet are met and in many cases, surpassed. During the planning phase, the CR is there it make certain that your project is properly planned out and that you are only receiving the services that you require. In the production phase, the CR will be in constant contact with you to handle all of your questions regarding your project and meet with you whenever appropriate. After your project is completed, the CR analyzes the project’s outcomes and compares them with your project’s goals. The CR is always thinking outside the box to find ways to meet your company’s needs and relieve your company’s problems. In the ever-changing online world you will be glad to know that our CRs are working hard to make sure your company is successful on the Net.

What qualifications does a Client Representative need to have?

Your success is vital to our success, and your CR is Unique ID’s connection from our company to you. Your CR is not just an outgoing person who has your best interests in mind. She/he has an understanding of our products and has experienced their effectiveness. Though they may not have as much technical knowledge as our programmers or as much artistic flare as our designers they do have overall experience in utilizing all of our services. They also have the uncanny ability to connect our services to your needs in an appropriately timed manner. Our company believes in ongoing education and we are constantly sharing ideas and testing theories to help make sure that your company succeeds.

Can anyone be a Client Representative?

I suppose you can be anything you put your mind to, however, our CRs are specially groomed for this position. They must be customer driven as opposed to sales driven. They must be able to strategize with you, our client, and have an overall feel for your mission, plans, troubles, and competition. And of course they must have knowledge of the Internet and a desire to learn about its ever-changing landscape. Although anyone could be a CR, our CRs are handpicked with you in mind.

How did I end up with my current Client Representative?

Well, currently CRs have been matched with you based on your location and size. In the future we will match clients to CRs who have the same interests as well. For example if you own a construction company and one of our CR’s has a construction background then they may be matched together, or if your company needs a large Pay-Per-Click (PPC) campaign and another CR previously worked with PPC budgets then we may match them together. Right now our CRs’ skills have and will continue to meet and hopefully exceed your expectations.

I hope this gives you more insight on the level of commitment we give to each and every client. If you are not currently utilizing all of your Client Representative’s potential, why not call him/her today. They will truly love to help.
