5 Simple Instagram Marketing Tips for Business

Author: Valerie Baker

A digital marketing strategy often includes social media. The most common social media platforms out there are:

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • Twitter
  • LinkedIn
  • Pinterest

The networks you decide to use will depend on your industry, your target audience, and the content that you’re committed to creating.

The Power of Instagram

Instagram has proven itself as a viable social network for businesses to post and advertise on. And since Facebook now owns Instagram, it makes it easier than ever for business to have a presence on Instagram.

Just to show the power of Instagram, here are some stats from HootSuite:

  • 62% of Instagram users login at least once per day
  • 200 million Instagram users visit at least once business profile daily
  • 1/3 of the most-viewed Stories are from businesses
  • 37% of American adults use Instagram (with the most popular age bracket being 18-29)

Now that you understand just how powerful Instagram is, we’re going to give you 5 simple tips that you can put in place to get more out of your Instagram business profile.

Utilize the Link in Bio Option

Instagram doesn’t allow you to put clickable links in posts. This is unfortunate, since as businesses, we’re so used to linking to areas of our websites in posts.

We do not recommend you add a link directly to your post because a user will not be able to click that and get to where you want them to go.

Instead, you’ll often see Instagram posts that say “Link in bio.” Your bio section is the only place you can add a clickable link and we recommend updating that link with your latest post link.

For example, if you are an online shop running a special Halloween sale, you’ll create a post like this. Then, update the link in your bio and users will be able to click that to get to your website page.

Remember to switch the link back once a message is no longer relevant or if you have a new link you want to post!

Follow Relevant Hashtags

I often find this is the most under-utilized tool on Instagram. I personally follow several hashtags for topics I’m interested in. As a business, you should follow hashtags for keywords related to your industry.

Following hashtags on your Instagram will add any posts tagged with those words to your feed. It allows you to see what your target audience and competitors are posting.

This isn’t to say that you must follow ALL hashtags related to your business. Look for hashtags that you would think of when thinking about your business/industry and see how many followers there are. You may be surprised at the types of hashtags you see and can even incorporate that into an SEO strategy.

Engage with Others

This tip is not specific to Instagram and applies to all social networks. As businesses, we’re often used to posting the content to fill our pages and then moving on to the next thing. However, it’s important to also engage with your followers.

When I say engage, I am referring to:

  1. Like posts your customers tag you in
  2. Reply to comments on your posts
  3. Engage with other pages by liking/commenting on their posts

It’s hard to structure this since social media itself is so fluid, but if you spend 5 minutes per day engaging, it will help your overall brand presence.

Use High-Quality Photos

Instagram is a visual network. There is far less text on Instagram than what you might see on Facebook or LinkedIn. And Instagram cuts of text on a user’s feed if it’s too long (they can expand to see more if they so choose).

Using high-quality photos is extremely important. This doesn’t mean you need a high-quality, professional grade camera. Most smartphones now have great cameras and if you can obtain a ring light (depending on the types of photos you’re posting), that will be even better.

Also, remember that a lot of social networks are used on mobile. So, any photos you post will be displayed as a portrait. Landscape photos can work in some cases, but to get the best view, make sure to post photos as portraits. (But stick to landscape photos for your website designer!)

Add Captions to Videos

Video, especially during COVID-19, has become extremely popular on most social networks. But keep in mind that the default setting for Instagram users is that the sound is automatically muted. You can increase engagement by adding captions to your videos and allow users to take in the content if they’re unable to unmute (or don’t want to). Aerie, a clothing brand, does this well. We recommend doing this on Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube as well.
