Phone systems, phones and phone bills can be one of the biggest expenses that businesses incur and have to deal. Purchasing a phone system, setting it up and then trouble shooting alone can run into the thousands of dollars. When Atilus first started we went this route, and even with friends in the business who were able to help us offset some of the costs and help us trouble shoot – it was still ridiculously expensive (and we even used an IP based telephony system!).
However savvy entrepreneurs and business owners are now turning to Internet phone service to both cut costs and operate more efficiently.
Internet phone services like Skype and Google Voice are no longer just for friends to chat and for individual entrepreneurs to use. They can now be used to effectively run multi million dollar businesses with many employees. A few years ago those businesses that tried to get ahead by using the latest technology ran into problems as they tested out various VOIP options and often suffered from poor connections and service. However that has changed a lot. Now Internet phone services like Skype and Google voice offer great quality and are even being used by giant corporations like Fox News. This is highlighted even further by one New Jersey judge issuing a court order for one couple to set up Skype service in order to maintain contact between the parents and their children. In fact it is amazing to see small and medium businesses still working with traditional phones these days. Certainly they are doing themselves a great disservice and throwing away money every month needlessly.
Using toll free numbers and the best forwarding options you can still maintain the presence of a world class organization yet operate on the maximum possible profit margins. Skype is perhaps the most well known of these services and has definitely developed a strong foot hold across the globe. Businesses of all sizes are using it and if offers a ton of features. It is great for video conferencing and can now even be used from your smart phone. In contrast the newer Google Voice has yet to really be accepted and incorporated on a wide scale. Google Voice (GV) definitely has it’s work cut out as many businesses are not going to want to make the move over if they already have all of their contacts and systems set up through Skype. However for those who already use Google mail and apps on a daily basis it is obviously convenient. Both offer the ability to record and block calls and offer voicemail. However, one major difference is that GV gives you a free phone number while Skype charges about $50 a year.
Whichever you choose to work with you are sure to realize huge savings over having to get a physical phone system and deal with big monthly bills and the common headaches of keeping it running smoothly.
